Dr. V. Alan Lombardi, MD
Biography
Dr. Lombardi has been practicing psychiatry since 1984. He has been in Charlotte since 1988. He cofounded University Psychiatric Associates in 1992. He works with adults dealing with all psychiatric illness doing primarily evaluations and the management of psychiatric medications. Dr. Lombardi takes pride in helping individuals recover from their current episode but sees long term recovery and the prevention of reoccurrence as a crucial aspect of his practice.

He developed an interest in addictions early in his career prior to moving to Charlotte pursuing certifications by the American Society of Addictive Medicine and in Addictive Psychiatry. He attended the University of Pittsburgh with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and his medical degree. He completed his residency at Western Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic also at the University of Pittsburgh.

Janet Cross PMHCNS-BC, CARN-AP, LCAS
Clinical Program Director
Biography
Janet has 30 years of experience in the mental health and substance abuse field helping individuals recover. She has been at University Psychiatric Associates since 1999. She manages the intensive outpatient substance abuse program providing group, family group, and individual therapy for the clients. Because of her training, she can address any mental health concerns also. She assists Dr. Lombardi to medically detoxify clients who have an addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opiates. She provides individual therapy for clients with a wide range of concerns. She also conducts DWI assessments.

Janet holds certification as an advanced practice psychiatric and mental health nurse and an advanced practice addictions nurse. She is a licensed RN and clinical addictions specialist. She helped several of the area hospitals develop their detoxification protocols and programs. Her focus is to use varies cognitive behavioral techniques to assist clients to achieve their personal goals in order to recover and live healthy productive lives.

Charles Beck
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Biography
Charles Beck is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at University Psychiatric Associates. He holds degrees from both Wake Forest University and UNC-Chapel Hill. He joined UPA in 2010 after a long career, having been employed at Wake Forest-Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and in the Veterans Healthcare System. He initially worked with parents of disabled children and then went to work with veterans and their families in a variety of mental health settings. He has practiced in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Charles enjoyed program development and administration, supervision, teaching, and mentoring, but he found psychotherapy the most interesting and rewarding. At UPA he provides individual therapy for adults and couples.
Kimberly Fena, MA, LPCA, LCASA
Counselor
Biography
Kimberly Fena is a Counselor with University Psychiatric Associates. Kimberly received a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialty in Addictions Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in May of 2014. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist Associate. She served as an Intern and provided treatment at UPA for one year prior to being hired as a counselor. Kimberly provides both individual and group therapy to her clients as well as education around their mental health challenges.

Kimberly believes in forming a strong therapeutic bond with her clients. By incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gestalt, and Narrative techniques, Kimberly works to create a safe, confidential space for her clients where they may grow and begin to face their challenges in a way which is supportive, empowering, and productive. As an integrated therapist, Kimberly’s goal is to help her clients begin a positive path to growth and well-being.

Debbie Lombardi PMHCNS-BC
Suboxone Coordinator
Biography
Debbie Lombardi is the Suboxone Coordinator with University Psychiatric Associates. She has a Masters in Psychiatric Nursing and serves as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, working in the field of psychiatry and substance abuse. She has provided treatment at UPA for almost 20 years, offering individual, group, and couples therapy to her clients. She has served her community and colleagues as a resource for education and has provided seminars on health care issues throughout the Southern States.

Debbie brings her experience from working as the Clinical Program Director at Charter Pines Hospital and prior management experience in working in an inpatient psychiatric facility to UPA. In addition, she utilizes her nursing role in addressing “the whole person” in her treatment approach. Due to Debbie’s years of experience she is able to offer extensive care to those dealing with either psychiatric or substance abuse problems, or is sometimes the case, both. Her philosophy of treatment is solution focused and focused on success.

Monica Lopez
Administrative Assistant
Biography
Monica Lopez is an Administrative Assistant at University Psychiatric Associates. She has a diploma in Medical Administration from ECPI. She joined UPA in 2012. Prior to joining UPA, she worked at Sunshine Pediatrics for 2 years where she served as a receptionist and a patient insurance analyst. At UPA, she is responsible for scheduling patients, medication prior authorizations and other administrative duties.
Karen Valentine
Office Manager
Biography
Karen Valentine is the Office Manager at University Psychiatric Associates. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Medical Administration from College of the Albemarle. She joined UPA in 2008 and has more than 15 of professional experience in Medical Office Administration. Prior to joining UPA, she worked at Cigna Health Insurance as a Claim Specialist and at Chowan Hospital as an Administrative Assistant. At UPA, she is responsible for the day-to-day management of the office. This includes financial management, staff supervision, customer service, information management, computer trouble shooting, and anything else that needs to be done
